Πολλά συγκροτήματα θα ήθελαν να ντεμπουτάρουν με τον τρόπο που το πέτυχαν αυτο οι Boston. Νούμερο 3 στο Billboard των charts στην Αμερική και μετά από τρεις μήνες χρίζεται πλατινένιο. Το 2003 έγινε το δεύτερο πιο πολυπλατινένιο (ντεμπούτο) άλμπουμ όλων των εποχών (17 φορές). Ο ιθύνων νους πίσω από αυτο το αριστούργημα ονομάζεται Tom Scholz. Κιθαρίστας, πληκτράς, συνθέτης και παραγωγός, ήταν αυτος που έπαιξε όλα τα όργανα στα αρχικά demos (πλην των ντραμς), τα οποία ηχογράφησε ο ίδιος στο δικό του υπόγειο στούντιο. Φυσικά δεν μπορώ να παραλείψω και τον Brad Delp στα φωνητικά ο οποίος έχει μια ξεχωριστή χροιά στην φωνή του η οποία ταιριάζει άψογα στο στυλ της μουσικής του Scholz και ειναι ο καταλληλότερος για να εκφράσει τα μηνύματα των τραγουδιών.

Σαν γενική εικόνα, θα έλεγα ότι ειναι ένα χαρούμενο άλμπουμ και προσπαθει να περάσει αισιόδοξα και αγνά μηνύματα, κάτι που δύσκολα θα βρει κάποιος στο σύνολο του σε ένα άλμπουμ τις μέρες μας. Αυτο φαίνεται όχι μόνο στους στίχους των περισσότερων τραγουδιών, αλλά και στην μουσική που κρατά σε όλη την διάρκεια τα ίδια τέμπο με εξαίρεση το τελευταίο κομμάτι. Καθόλου πολύπλοκη μουσική, όμορφα riffs, θαυμάσια φωνητικά και ένα υπέροχο πάντρεμα των τριων.

Ο δίσκος ξεκινά με το πασίγνωστο - και ένα από τα τρια singles - το ''More than a feeling''. Πιστεύω οτι από το συγκεκριμένο τραγούδι μπορεί κάποιος να καταλάβει το πόσο καλός τραγουδιστής ειναι ο Brad Delp αφού 'ανεβαίνει' σε διάφορα επίπεδα και μάλιστα κάποια από αυτα ειναι αρκετά ψηλά. Αρκετά μεγάλο ειναι και το ποσοστό των τραγουδιών του δίσκου που σκιαγραφούν την συγκεκριμένη φάση της ζωής του Scholz όπως και των υπολοίπων που φαίνεται να ζουν στον δικό τους κόσμο μέσα από το συκρότημα. Μέσα από τους στίχους των ''Piece of mind'', ''Rock & Roll band'' και ''Hitch a ride'' ο Scholz μας παρουσιάζει συνετά και χωρίς καμία υπερβολή  την ζωή, τις συνήθειες, τις δυσκολίες και τις εμπειρίες από την ζωή στο συγκρότημα.  Προσωπικά αυτο που πιστεύω οτι αντικατοπτρίζει πλήρως την εικόνα ειναι το ''Rock & Roll band'', στο οποίο παρότι ειναι πολύ σύντομο σε διάρκεια, ο Scholz αφήνει το στίγμα του με τα υπέροχα και σύντομα σόλα του τόσο στην μέση όσο και στο τέλος του κομματιού.  Το πιο 'αδύνατο' σημείο πιστεύω στο άλμπουμ ειναι το ''Something about you'', αλλα λόγω του ότι κινείται στο ίδιο tempo με τα άλλα κομμάτια το βοηθά να ειναι προσιτό στο άκουσμα. Το συγκρότημα φαίνεται να ρίχνει ταχύτητες και το τελευταίο τραγούδι στον δίσκο ''Let me take you home tonight'' ειναι ήρεμο στην πιο μεγάλη του διάρκεια με αρκετά όμορφα σόλο της κιθάρας αλλά στο τελευταίο λεπτό, 'ανεβαίνει' και  κλείνει τον δίσκο στο συνηθησμένο tempo. Τελευταίο άφησα το άσμα που ακούει στο όνομα ''Foreplay/Long time'' επειδή πιστεύω ειναι η καλύτερη στιγμή στον δίσκο. Παρόλη την μεγάλη του διάρκεια (σχεδόν 8 λεπτά) πιστεύω οτι ειναι το αποκορύφωμα και δίχνει την μαεστρία του Scholz ως συνθέτης. Το τραγούδι χωρίζεται σε δύο μέρη: το ''Foreplay'' που ειναι ένα instrumental σόλο/εισαγωγή στο οποίο τα πλήκτρα και το μπάσο συνδυάζονται για να χαρίσουν μια εκπληκτική μελωδία και να σε προετοιμάσουν για το δεύτερο μέρος, το ''Long time''. Ειδικά σε αυτο το κομμάτι πιστεύω οτι γίνεται το καλύτερο πάντρεμα των οργάνων με τα πλήκτρα να θέτουν το σκηνικό και την κιθάρα με τα υπέροχα σόλα και την αξιοθαύμαστη φωνή του Delp να δίνουν ρεσιτάλ.

Many bands would like to have a similar debut like that of Boston's. Number 3 at US Billboard charts, and a certification as platinum three months later. In 2003, it became the second most platinum debut album of all time (x17 platinum). The mastermind behind this work of art is called Tom Scholz. A guitarist, keyboardist, composer and producer, Scholz was the one who played all the instruments (except drums) on the initial demo recordings which took place in his basement studio. Of course, I cannot pass by and not mention Brad Delp on vocals, a singer with such a special tone on his voice which matches excellently on the style of music crafted by Scholz. I would argue that at that point in time, he was one of the only vocalists in the music industry who could express the messages that Scholz wanted to pass through his songs. 

The album starts with the well-known (and one of the three singles) ''More Than A Feeling''. I believe that from this first song, someone can understand how good singer Brad Delp is, since his voice reaches very high levels. Also notable is the fact that a big percentage of the songs in the album sketch the life of Scholz and the others at the specific point in time, which they live in their own 'rock and roll fantasy'. Through the lyrics of ''Piece of Mind'', ''Rock & Roll Band'' and ''Hitch a Ride'', Scholz prudently and without any exaggeration presents us the life, the habits, the difficulties and the experiences of being in a band. Personally the song that I believe is fully reflecting this image is ''Rock and Roll Band'', a song in which Scholz leaves his trademark with the magnificent (but short) solos in the beginning and in the end of it. 

I had found ''Something About You'' the weakest song of the album, but because of the fact that it moves at the same tempos as the other songs it is very approachable for the listener. It seems that the band decides for a moment to slow down and although ''Let Me Take You Home Tonight'' starts as a peaceful and calm song with beautiful guitar solos, during the last minute the tempo again increases and closes the album at the same levels. I have left on purpose the hymn called ''Foreplay/Long time'' in the end because in my humble opinion is the best moment on the album. Despite it's long duration (almost 8 minutes) I believe that is the climax of the disc and it's the evidence of Scholz's mastery as a composer. The song is divided into two parts: ''Foreplay'' which is an instrumental solo/intro in which the bass and the keyboards are combined magnificently to give an enormous melody and prepare the listener for the second part, ''Long time''. In this part especially I believe that the combination of the instruments is perfect, with keyboards setting the background with the guitar solos being in line with Delp's wonderful voice, deliver a worth-noting outcome. 

As a general comment, I would describe it as a good-tempered album that tries to pass pure and optimistic messages to it's listeners. This can be seen not only to the lyrics of the majority of the songs, but also to the music which keeps the same tempo throughout the whole album (with an exception only to the last song), creating a 'marriage' between simple music, beautiful riffs and lovely vocals.
