Bon Jovi - 7800 Degrees Fahrenheit (1985)

Genre: Rock / Hard Rock

Οι περισσότεροι ίσως γνωρίζουν τους Bon Jovi από τα Slippery When Wet, New Jersey και Keep the Faith.

Η ζωντάνια στα ντραμς του Tico Torres ειναι το στοιχείο που κάνει το ''In and out of Love'' ένα υπέροχο κομμάτι και δίνει το έναυσμα για το τι θα επακολουθήσει στον δίσκο. Ο δυναμίτης που ακούει στο όνομα ''King of the Mountain'' ειναι ένα ισχυρό τραγούδι σε οτι αφορά δυναμισμό και ένταση, ενώ κάτι παρόμοιο γινεται και στο ''(I Don't Wanna Fall) to the Fire''. Από τα ''Silent Night'' και ''The Hardest Part is the Night'' αντιλαμβάνεται κανείς που ''πάτησε'' το συγκρότημα για να συνθέσει τις μπαλάντες του στις μετέπειτα κυκλοφορίες.

1. In and Out of Love (4:26)
2. The Price of Love (4:14)
3. Only Lonely (5:02)
4. King of the Mountain (3:54)
5. Silent Night (5:08)
6. Tokyo Road (5:42)
7. The Hardest Part is the Night (4:25)
8. Always Run To You (5:00)
9. (I Don't Wanna Fall) to the Fire (4:28)
10. Secret Dreams (4:54)

Most people might know Bon Jovi from Slippery When Wet, New Jersey and Keep the Faith. Not unsurprisingly though, since they became widely famous during these three previously mentioned albums and the hits they offered. I would go a step back and concentrate on 7800 Degrees Fahrenheit a totally underrated album. It is 1985 and it's been a year since the band had their debut album released. Not wanting to waste any more time they go straight into the studio to record their follow-up album. The outcome is an album with the same power and tone like Bon Jovi but with better songs in it's total. A ballsy attitude by a bunch of twenty-year old mates with tight jeans and long hair who do not take much. It is the album with no love songs and other kind of ballads, just straight rock music. Lyrics are not Jon's strong point at that time, however he was showing signs that he was following the right path.

Tico Torres's livelihood in his drum playing is the fact that makes ''In and Out of Love'' a great song and gives the spark for great things to come. ''Price of Love'' seduces with it's catchy intro solo on guitar, while ''Only Lonely'' intoxicates the listener with it's melody and chorus. The dynamite ''King of the Mountain'' is a forceful song in regards to power and intensity, whilst ''(I Don't Wanna Fall) to the Fire'' is something very close as well. I believe that ''Silent Night'' and ''The Hardest Part is the Night'' are two songs which underpin the inspiration behind the numerous ballads which came later on from the band. ''Tokyo Road'' is another great composition with powerful riffs and with Jon's outstanding performance shows his potentials as a frontman. ''Secret Dreams'' is based on the melody laid down by the keyboards, which give their own distinct beauty on Bon Jovi's sound.

Overall, this album ''shouts'' that Bon Jovi is a band with great potentials and if handled properly they would surely find success. Indeed, through the passage of years the band became more commercial and they managed to capitalize their publicity and thus turned to a great rock band.

The Firn - The Firm (1985)

Genre: Rock

Aκούγωντας την σύνθεση αυτου του συκγροτήματος κάποιος καταλαβαίνει αμέσως οτι πρόκειται για ένα σουπερ-γκρουπ: Paul ''The Voice'' Rodgers στα φωνητικά (πρώην-Bad Company, Free), Jimmy Page (πρώην-Led Zeppelin) στις κιθάρες, Chris Slade (πρώην-Uriah Heep) στα τύμπανα και τον Tony Franklin στο μπάσο δημιουργούν (έστω και για μικρό χρονικό διάστημα) τους The Firm.Όπως φάνηκε, ο δίσκος δεν έτυχε της απετούμενης ανταπόκρισης από το κοινό και έμεινε στο περιθώριο.

Τα ''Radioactive'' και ''Money Can't Buy'' ειναι τα δύο τραγούδια που φέρουν την σφραγίδα 'Paul Rodgers'. Πιστεύω οτι το cover του ''You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling'' ειναι το πιο αδύνατο κομμάτι στο άλμπουμ αφού ήταν εντελώς αχρείαστο και εκτός της όλης εικόνας.

Προσωπικά αγαπημένα/αξιοσημείωτα κομμάτια: ''Close'', ''Someone to Love'', ''Satisfaction Guaranteed''

1. ''Closer'' (2:53)
2. ''Make or Break'' (4:21)
3. ''Someone To Love'' (4:53)
4. ''Together'' (3:54)
5. ''Radioactive'' (2:49)
6. ''You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling (4:32)
7. ''Money Can't Buy'' (3:34)
8. ''Satisfaction Guaranteed'' (4:10)
9. ''Midnight Moonlight'' (9:13)

When someone hears the lineup of this group, immediately understands that he has fallen onto a supergroup: Paul ''The Voice'' Rodgers on vocals (ex-Bad Company, Free), Jimmy Page (ex-Led Zeppelin) on guitars, Chris Slade on drums (ex-Uriah Heep) and bass player Tony Franklin. These four consisted for a short period of time the band 'The Firm'. As it seems from the album sales and popularity, fans did not response positively on this co-operation and left them on the sideline. I believe it was a bit unfair though because it is a remarkable effort and such projects can identify the strengths and the limitations that an artist has, since moving from his previous successful band. It is the point where the artist will be put under the microscope and he will be judged thoroughly.

The album opens with the adorable ''Closer'' and shows the music directions of the band. Besides the four main instruments, this is the only song which includes a trumpet and a saxophone on decent levels that will not bore the listener. A notable characteristic of this song is the emphasis that is given mainly on the bass, since it is the instrument which draws the lines and not Page's guitar. The only worth mentioning fact on ''Make or Break'' are Page's good old solo-style playing which give a different color to the song. ''Radioactive'' and ''Money Can't Buy'' are the two songs on the album that have the trademark 'Paul Rodgers'. A brief listening is enough for someone to comprehend the music style and influences of Paul, since the remind Bad Company years. I believe that ''You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling'' cover is the weakest point on the album since it was needless and completely out of the album's overall picture. I sense that ''Someone to Love'' is the track that combines every good aspect of what the individual members can contribute to the band: powerful and groovy bass lines, fancy solos which have the signature of Page, a solid and skillful Chris Slade and a passionate Paul Rodgers. Another song that stands strong on the album is ''Satisfaction Guaranteed''. A medium-tempo song where Page's blues-style solos are tied up with Rodgers melodic voice.

The album closes with ''Midnight Moonlight'', a song which comes straight from Led Zeppelin since it was an unfinished work from Physical Graffiti's recording. Personally I admire and respect Rodgers as a composer and he is high on my list of favorable vocalists, but the specific song needs his Robert Plant and Led Zeppelin. In addition, I found the backing vocals to the end of the song useless enough to wear it out. All in all, a decent effort that has to be heard because of such a line-up.

YES - 90125 (1983)

Genre: Progressive Rock

Ασφαλώς έχει χαρακτηριστικά από progressive rock, αλλά αν κάποιος ακούσει προηγούμενες κυκλοφορίες της μπάντας όπως 'Close to the Edge' και 'Tales from Topographic Oceans' θα δει τεράστια διαφορά όχι μόνο στην διάρκεια των τραγουδιών αλλά και στην πολυπλοκότητα τους.
Το άνοιγμα του δίσκου γίνεται με το ''Owner of a Lonely Heart'', το πιο εμπορικό ίσως κομμάτι από τα οχτώ. Ακολουθεί το ''It Can Happen'' το οποίο ειναι και το αγαπημένο μου από τον δίσκο.

Προσωπικά αγαπημένα/αξιοσημείωτα κομμάτια: It Can Happen, Our Song, Changes

1. Owner Of A Lonely Heart (4:30)
2. Hold On (5:18)
3. It Can Happen (5:29)
4. Changes (6:20)
5. Cinema (2:07)
6. Leave It (4:14)
7. Our Song (4:18)
8. City Of Love (4:52)
9. Hearts (7:43)

The specific album marked the return of two ex-members of the band: Jon Anderson (vocals) who left the band in 1980 and Tony Kaye (keyboards) who returned to the band after his previous withdrawal. The band is fairly characterised as pioneers of this music style, but I would not describe this album as a 100% progressive one. It surely has pure progressive rock characteristics, however, listening to previous albums such as 'Close to the Edge' and 'Tales from Topographic Oceans' someone can understand a huge difference not only to the duration of the songs but also to their complexity. In fact in this album, Yes present a pop-mainstream image, something that is not very acceptable by their hardcore fans. Personally, I did not mind at all at this change. In contrast I found it very interesting since it leaves behind any experimentations and music explorations and focuses on the main point: to produce nice music. I believe that this is not only a special album for the band, but also a great album of the 80s. I think that it is a nice example for someone who has not experienced YES sound before and it is a good starting point for exploring deeper on the YES vault, the situation that I went through.

The album's opening track ''Owner of a Lonely Heart'' is probably the most commercial of the eight. The catchy chorus, guitar's solo technicality and the beautiful groove by Squire on the bass, are the characteristics that I found most interesting in this song. ''Hold On'' could be an ordinary ballad song if the tempo was a bit slower. It has a nice melody and the band chooses to follow a different approach with the introduction of pauses and changes in the rhythm making it much interesting. Next on is ''It Can Happen'', personally my favourite on the album. I believe that Chris Squire's bass notes and Tony Kaye's harmonic keyboard playing are monumental in this one. A notable characteristic in this song is the sound and play of Trevor's guitar, since at many points it reminds Pink Floyd's The Wall (no offense to YES quality on this masterpiece).

''Changes'' is the fourth track which opens with a characteristic-YES introduction, and it is one of the things that distinguishes in the album. Excellent performance by Anderson on vocals and I believe that this is one of the album's songs that proves his ability. Although it is one of the lengthiest songs on the album, I found it as a song with extremely good flow which finishes before you understand that six minutes have gone by. ''Cinema'' is an instrumental and I don't think that has something special to show. ''Leave It'' is a particular radio-friendly song and has a completely different orientation than the previous track. The melody of ''Our Song'' is one of the most pleasant moments on the album and can easily be imprinted into someone's head. Another stunning play from the bass and the keyboards, probably the top instruments on the album.

If someone listens exclusively ''City of Love'' will be triggered because it has a more 'heavy' approach in sound and style, in respect to the whole album. Nice chorus and beautiful background vocals are the main features. The album is concluded with ''Hearts'', a nice progressive song which combines all the characteristics that I pointed throughout the whole album and have the trademark of YES.

Deep Purple - Perfect Strangers (1984)

Genre: Rock

Ο δίσκος ξεκινά με το ανυπέρβλητο ''Knocking at Your Back door'' και θέτει αμέσως τον τόνο και τα μέτρα στα οποία θα κινηθεί η μπάντα. Το ''Under The Gun'' συνεχίζει από το σημείο που μας άφησε το προηγούμενο κομμάτι.

Προσωπικά αγαπημένα/αξειοσημείωτα κομμάτια: ''Knocking at your back door'', ''Under the gun'', ''Perfect Strangers'', ''Hungry Daze''

1. ''Knocking At Your Back Door'' (7:09)
2. ''Under The Gun'' (4:40)
3. ''Nobody's Home'' (4:01)
4. ''Mean Streak'' (4:26)
5. ''Perfect Strangers'' (5:31)
6. ''A Gypsy's Kiss'' (5:13)
7. ''Wasted Sunsets'' (3:56)
8. ''Hungry Daze'' (5:01)

After a nine-year hiatus, Deep Purple returned to the studio with their most well-known lineup: Ritchie Blackmore and Roger Glover from Rainbow, Ian Gillan from Black Sabbath and Jon Lord with Ian Paice from their short break in Whitesnake. The result was another magical album, since they proved for one more time that there is a special chemistry between this group of five.

The album kick-starts with the sublime ''Knocking at Your Back door'' and sets the tone and the standards upon the band will move on. Although this is one of the lengthiest songs that the band has ever produced, it is not tiresome and weary and finishes before you even notice. ''Under The Gun'' continues from the spot that the previous song left us. The intro is a superb keyboards solo and a simple guitar riff that denotes Blackmore's presence which in turn will nail us with his solo performance later in the song. Gillan is steady and passionate, while Glover and Paice are discreet and deliver us a nice song. Moving on, Jon Lord with a synthesizer solo introduces us to ''Nobody's Home''. A worthy song I would say, but without the glamour of it's predecessors. A point of reference is the solo rotation/exchange somewhere in the middle of the song: a Blackmore-style solo which leave us to the hands of the almighty Lord who reminds us of ''In Rock'' and ''Fireball'' eras with his organ sounds. ''Mean Steak'' is a clever-structured song because it enters directly to the song's meaning: the band doesn't want to be repetitive and so there is no intro. Splendid solos once again from Blackmore who shows that Rainbow helped him develop his play a lot more.

''Perfect Strangers'' is undeniably the diamond in this album and I am sure that there is not a single fun on Deep Purple who doesn't recognize it. I would surely included it in my list of simplest and best songs ever to be written. I don't know whether to start from the simple keyboard solo or the great guitar riff. Could I not mention Paice's solid drumming or Gillan's passionate vocals? Truly, there are not many bands that managed to compose a song as recognizable, glamorous, memorable, simple and without a solo (!) as Deep Purple. Simply magnificent! Songs like ''A Gypsy's Kiss'' are of those which set the foundations of metal music: an up-tempo beat and great guitar and keyboard solos. After Gillan's last lyrics at the end of the song a melodic uproar begins: Paice and Glover set the pace, Jon Lord takes the initials and Ritchie Blackmore 'spreads the panic' with his marvelous guitar solo which takes your breath away (maybe the best solo on the album).
From the album a ballad is not absent and we can encounter it under the name of ''Wasted Sunsets''. I will not say nothing more but the fact that Gillan's performance is truly emotional on this one. The thing that impressed me on ''Hungry Daze'' is the two characteristics that the band inserted in the song without affecting it's flow. Despite the guitar solos we will run into a blistering drum solo and some neo-classical elements that reminds us of opera pieces. Lyrics are for once more fantastic since they refer to past stories and events.

As a general comment I would say that this is one of the best reunion albums in rock history. The specific line-up of the band is the best and shows it's class and levels. Imposing music and interesting lyrics at the album's length which make it one of my favourites.
